Pilar Alvarado, 75, of Jamaica, New York, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, in East Northport, Long Island.

Born on May 15, 1951, in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Pilar embarked on a courageous new chapter of her life when she immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, at the age of 17. Through determination, resilience, and hard work, she established a successful life in New York, built a respected career in public service, and embraced every opportunity to experience the world around her.

Pilar dedicated more than 20 years of her career to the New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development, where she worked in Code Enforcement. She took pride in her work and was respected for her commitment and professionalism.

Retirement allowed Pilar to embrace one of her greatest passions—travel. She found joy in exploring the world and creating lasting memories in places including Germany, Dubai, Sweden, Spain, Amsterdam, Israel, London, Italy, and Jamaica, among many others. Her adventurous spirit, curiosity, and love of experiencing different cultures brought her immense happiness.

Pilar was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Joaquin Alvarado Garcia and Maria Contreras Cornejo, and by her brother, Peter.

She leaves behind her loving son, Christopher Gonzalez, and his wife, Amy; her cherished grandchildren, Yesenia Gonzalez and Jordan Gonzalez; her sisters, Cecilia Alvarado, Rocio Alban, and Sonia Alvarado; and her beloved cousin, Lily Navarro, who was also her best friend, favorite travel companion, and partner in crime. Pilar is also lovingly remembered by several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness, warmth, and generous spirit.

Pilar will be remembered for her strength, independence, love of family, and zest for life. She touched countless lives with her compassion and unwavering devotion to those she loved. Her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

I wanted to let you know that, unfortunately, we have decided to postpone my mother's celebration of life. With everything that has happened and with me being in another state, there has been a lot to manage and take care of, and I need some additional time to get everything organized properly.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, and I truly appreciate everyone's understanding and patience during this difficult time. We will share the new date and details as soon as they are finalized.
