Rudolf “Rudi” Vonbriel passed away unexpectedly on a bike ride home after a game of basketball on August 4, 2026. He was 76. Rudi was the cherished son of Marianne and Rudolf and a favored nephew of Horst, Lisa, and Franz and Irmgard. He is survived by a crew of cousins on two continents, a colony full of wonderful friends and Naia, who was such an important part of his life for many years.

During his life, Rudi had a few interesting jobs including real estate photographer and NYC cab driver, but he quickly turned his creativity and love of photography into his lifelong career. If you’ve ever admired a twilight NYC skyline, a motion-blur shot that felt alive, or a peaceful winter scene from Long Island, chances are you’ve felt Rudi’s artistry. His images were everywhere: print, puzzles, stock photography, and magazine guides for photographers learning the craft. His work became part of the visual heartbeat of New York. Through Instagram, he created content sharing original photos, music, and observations in his own unique way. Rudi was also a teacher at heart who loved sharing his knowledge with fledgling photographers. He authored two instructional books about his signature lighting and blurring techniques called Shooting in the Twilight Zone and Pan-Blur and he chose the best of his many cartoons to produce the book 75 Gag Cartoons.

But what made Rudi special wasn’t just his talent - it was his generosity, his humor and his peaceful spirit. He had his opinions, certainly, but his friends describe him as easygoing and engaging, especially when the subject turned to politics, sports - especially the Mets - and of course photography. He taught, he encouraged and he shared what he knew. He made the world brighter, through his lens, his words and his kindness. His life and his art helped us all to see the beauty and possibility in every day.

A private family remembrance was held on the beach. Those who knew and cared for Rudi can remember him whenever they look out over the water where he now rests peacefully with his parents.
