“Kathy” passed away suddenly on October 30, 2025 at the age of 65. She was born on June 26, 1960 in Mineola, NY to John P. Kleis, Jr. and Edna Mae Bittle Kleis.
Kathy, the third child of Jack and Edna, grew up with siblings John, Brian, Jeanne, Andrew, Mary, Paula, and Matthew. She was known for calling her siblings affectionate nicknames that were all her own. After moving to Oakdale, NY, she started school at St. John Nepomucene before relocating to Bayport where she then attended Academy Street Elementary School. Kathy, who had special needs, attended Maryhaven School and Seton Hall.
After finishing school, Kathy lived independently in Port Jefferson with family support, particularly Jack, until she needed programs such as Pilgrim State, Kings Park, and state-supported homes. Despite her ongoing mental health challenges, she remained a valued community member and worked various jobs through these programs, persevering with resilience admired by those around her.
Kathy faced challenges, but those close to her appreciated her humor and honesty while managing her intensity. She candidly expressed herself while adapting to life’s circumstances. Losing her mother was especially difficult for Kathy, but there is comfort in knowing they are now reunited.
Kathy was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and bravely underwent treatment. During this difficult time, the connection with her siblings deepened and she formed new friendships, such as with Patrick who was quite supportive. These relationships helped her enjoy some of her best moments in recent years. Although her cancer and other health issues returned, she remained lively until her sudden passing, sparing her further suffering.
Kathy is survived by her siblings as well as her godmother, Rachel Doering.
