It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Ellen Potucek, age 77, of Bayside, New York, who peacefully passed away on August 13, 2025.
Mary Ellen dedicated her professional life to serving others as Supervisor of Pharmacy at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, where her compassionate care, expertise, and leadership touched countless lives. Her commitment to her patients and profession exemplified her generous spirit and attention to detail.
A passionate world traveler with a particular love for London, Mary Ellen pursued her academic interests with dedication, studying at Oxford University where she developed her expertise in British medieval queens. Her scholarly pursuits and deep knowledge of medieval history enriched her understanding of the past and informed her love of British culture. She cherished her travels with her life partner Helena, who preceded her in death, creating countless precious memories together exploring the world they both loved.
Mary Ellen appreciated the finer things in life, particularly enjoying fine dining at elegant restaurants with white tablecloths, where she savored both exceptional cuisine and refined atmospheres. In her personal time, she found great joy in the pages of British mystery novels, often losing herself in the intricate plots and clever detective work that captivated her imagination. She was also an avid antiquing enthusiast, with a keen eye for discovering treasures and stories from the past. These passions reflected her love of history, mystery, and the beauty found in well-crafted things.
Above all, Mary Ellen was a devoted sister and beloved aunt who brought warmth, wisdom, and love to her family. Her gentle presence and caring nature created lasting memories that will be cherished forever. She delighted in sharing stories of her travels and historical knowledge with those she loved.
Mary Ellen is survived by her loving sister Barbara, brothers Edward and Stephen, brother-in-law Daniel, sister-in-law Linda, four adoring nieces: Elaine, Lori, Barbara, and Annemarie, and four grand-nieces who brought her immense joy. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, intellectual curiosity, and the special bond she shared with each member of her family.
Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
