Kathleen d’Auvergne Mitchell, a mother, a friend and a daughter, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025. Kathy knew she was extremely loved. She made it to Level 89!
Kathy was born September 2, 1936 in Jacksonville, Florida to Janie and Walter Mitchell. At the tender age of three she moved to New York City.
Where she spent her youth riding the subway (and at just 5 years old, started riding it alone, could you imagine) attending church at Saint Bartholomew’s and enjoying all the things that New York City had to offer.
She attended an all girls college in New York, then went onto NYU and, finally, left for California to attend UCLA where Kathy met her husband Dick Thies.
Although their marriage didn’t last.
They had two children, Bryan and Brooke.
She worked hard to put a roof over their heads and food on the table. All the while, keeping the family home in Palos Verdes afloat, so both her children could finish high school.
Kathy loved architecture and had a flare for home design, so it was only fitting that she became a real estate agent.
She served the Palos Verdes Peninsula area for 25 years.
All her clients loved her and her passion and ability to find them their perfect home.
Kathy had a passion for all things tennis. She loved spending time at the beach and attending high school football games while watching her son in the marching band and her daughter on the drill team.
After Brooke and Bryan left for college, like any true New Yorker, Kathy returned to the city that had stolen her heart as a child.
She resided at the Penington House, in the Gramercy Park area, where she made new friends, young and old.
And again enjoyed all the many things that New York City had to offer.
She is survived by her son, Bryan Thies and her daughter, Brooke Genesse; her grandchildren, Mitchell and Aubrey Genesse, many cousins as well as lifelong friends.
My mother had a glittering green thumb. She loved flowers and plants and trees alike.
