David Roger Gaeckler

David “Roger” Gaeckler, 84, of Oyster Bay, New York, passed away peacefully on November 13, 2025. A beloved husband, father, friend, mentor, and Hall of Fame coach, Roger was known for his lifelong dedication to family, his sharp intellect, and his remarkable leadership in bringing Hofstra University’s men’s basketball team to its first NCAA Division I tournament appearance.

Born in York, Pennsylvania in 1941, Roger was the son of Gene and Paul Gaeckler, who filled their home with warmth, dancing, and a spirit of hospitality. He often recalled how much joy and laughter his parents shared with neighbors and friends. Some of his fondest childhood memories included trips to the beach.

Roger attended Susquehanna High School before studying physiology at Gettysburg College. His academic path and compassionate nature were deeply shaped by his family dynamics: his older sister Nancy, who lived with a disability, and his younger brother Charlie, who was deaf. Their experiences inspired him to live with empathy, patience, and a drive to help others—values that followed him throughout his life and career.

Roger met the love of his life, Sylvie, when a mutual friend asked him to pick her up for a birthday party. From that chance moment, something sparked. The connection was immediate, warm, and enduring. One year later, they were married on Christmas Eve, beginning a lifelong partnership built on devotion, humor, and adventure. Roger treasured Sylvie’s Saint Lucian heritage and developed his own deep love for the island.

With Sylvie, he lovingly raised Desiree and Destini, who were the joy of his later years. He also cherished his children from his first marriage, Nicole and Adrian. Family was central to his life, and he supported each of his children with unwavering care, encouragement, and affection, and took great pride that he served as Desiree and Destini’s high school and AAU basketball coach.

He also adored his pets—Knox, Gaia, and Loki—who were constant sources of companionship and joy.

Roger’s friendships were strong and enduring. He shared decades of memories with dear friends including George Hartenstein, the late Phil Billings, Richie Laurel, Kenny Rood, and many members of the Hofstra basketball community. His coaching legacy, especially leading Hofstra to its historic NCAA Division I tournament appearance, remains a treasured milestone for the University and for the players who admired him.

Professionally, Roger excelled as a Senior Vice President at UBS and later at Raymond James, where he built meaningful relationships with colleagues and clients. He also served as the financial adviser for the Georgia Hilden Foundation, offering his expertise to advance causes that mattered deeply to him.

A committed member of First Presbyterian Church of Oyster Bay, Roger shared his time, wisdom, and heart with the congregation. His faith guided him quietly but steadily throughout his life.

Everyone who knew Roger remembers his love of chess, karaoke, reading, history, and documentaries. Curious, thoughtful, and sharp, he brought passion and humor to everything he did.

Roger will always be remembered for his generosity, kindness, and his ability to make everyone feel seen and valued. His voice, full of warmth and encouragement, will echo in the memories of those who loved him. We could not have asked for a better husband, father, sibling, and friend, and we will miss him every day.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings. He is survived by his loving wife Sylvie; his children Desiree, Destini, Nicole, and Adrian; his sister Cindy; his nieces and nephews, including Tiffany, Lisa, Joann, Linda, Randy, and Shannon; the Clovis Family of St. Lucia; extended family members; Polo; his cherished friends; and all those whose lives were touched by his presence.
