As Carol’s husband, I filled that unique and sometimes awkward role of Jim’s son in law. Although we lived on opposite coasts, we did get to know one another during the annual family trip to Las Vegas, and after travel was no longer possible for him, during my spring visits with Carol to Long Island. I liked to refer to myself as the “Meathead” to Jim’s “Archie” – the liberal idealist who confounded, amused, and sometimes pissed off his conservative father in law. But like Archie, Jim also had that soft center, and he really made an effort to attempt to embrace alternate viewpoints and put me at ease. Throughout my travels I would search out unusual foods (enter cuttlefish curry, et al) and convey to him the odd dinner-of-the-week. All of my weird discoveries to him had one name – “green weeds underwater”. Among the things I will always remember about Jim is his curiosity, a general but sincere curiosity about all aspects of our life experiences. Expect twenty questions, and then twenty more. He was also very generous and thoughtful. Whenever we’d visit, he would make the effort to stock up on whatever drinks and snacks Carol and I wanted. We had some great discussions about baseball (and obscure baseball trivia), however I did not enjoy the drubbing I took as a result of our annual Yankees vs. Angels wagers. Every spring it was – Jim (enthusiastically): “We got action again?”, and John (wincing): “Sure, why not?” (oh crap!). All in all, Jim was truly a larger than life character, quirky and charming and extremely quick-witted, who seemed to touch everyone he knew.

Jim was my sister Audreys husband. I live in California so I only saw him once in awhile, at family gatherings. I met them in Las Vegas several times, we always had fun. I will always love and remember Jim for the way he took care of my sister Audrey especially the last years of her life.

Jimmy was my "Wilson" neighbor. We would always converse over the fence about baseball, basketball, and just about anything. I remember when a tree branch from his yard crashed on to my house and he offered to pay for any damage. I looked at it and said "Nope, just a scratch. Missed any damage by that much." He helped me remove the branch (which was rather large, and that was it. One winter day, he flagged me down as I was coming home from work and asked me if I could help him fix his mail box. The snow plow took it down. So I grabbed some spare parts and recommended that he replace the entire mailbox post. "No John, just patch it together so that it stays up there." And that's exactly what I did. That was six or seven years ago. Every once in awhile, I would ask him if he wanted me to replace the assembly and he would laugh and tell me what a good job I did. I will miss him.

My Uncle Jimmy was one of the smartest and funniest guys I ever knew. His dedication to his wife knew no bounds and I hope they are together again, taking long walks by the water and laughing...laughing...laughing. Love and miss them both!

A one of a kind, wise, easy going man. Jim you will be missed. I met Jim through the website Elderhelpers and for about two years I saw him pretty much every weekend to pick up groceries or to run an errand for him. He always took an interest in how things were going in my life and always told me “but your self something while you are doing my shopping. He was a quiet, very independent guy, but very smart and humble man. He never wanted to cause any inconvenience for anybody. I am confident he is at peace now, free of pain, eating his chips ahoy cookies, Hershey’s chocolates and Dr. Pepper, hanging out with his wife who he missed so much. Until we meet again, Rest In Peace my “old man friend”

I have too much to say about my Dad, I can't put it all here. I am currently writing a short "biography" of my Dad and will send it to anyone who would like it. Please email me if you want a copy. Love, Carol
